CAUT Policy Statement
Academic staff should have sufficient support and flexible work schedules in order to meet the responsibilities and demands of their personal lives.
Academic staff are occasionally required to leave the workplace to deal with these demands. Academic staff should not have to use their sick leave in order to attend to family and personal responsibilities. Sick leave should be used only in situations where an employee is sick.
Collective agreements should provide appropriate paid leave for personal, family, or unforeseen responsibilities, such as to care for another person, attend scheduled appointments or family events, or resolve personal matters where these responsibilities cannot be managed outside of scheduled working hours.
